InFocus projectors
Infocus is one of the leading providers of projectors all over the world. The company has a long track record of innovation and technology improvement. Infocus Corporation has as wide range of video projectors with 13 commercial models and 8 video and home theater projections. One of its best selling projectors is the Screenplay 4805 that offers a good visual quality at a very competitive price. The latest model, Play Big IN72, works at a resolution of 480p (DVD quality) and also features higher lumen (lamp brightness), lower fan noise, improved picture quality, and an attractive design. With a retail price of only $999, this projector is a steal.
Features
InFocus projectors are always designed to stand out and their looks alone set them apart. These projectors will either be sitting on adjustable feet or they will make use of a swivel stand that is very helpful when mounting the projector on a table. The same swivel based is easily removed for ceiling mounting and replaced with a ceiling mount. Continuing its tradition of innovation, some of the InFocus projectors might seem to follow their own rules that do not follow conventional wisdom. Fortunately, the innovation always works and there are never any problems even if the design concept is entirely new and removed from what consumers are used to.
IN72
The IN72 model has a 1.2x manual zoom that restricts the placement of the projector. On the other hand, the zoom range is enough to accommodate any screen size so the two things balance out rather neatly. There is no provision to tilt the lens. That means everything is projected at the 20% upward tilt built into the projector. So things are fine as long as the projector is at normal table level but a placement in the back, that will naturally have to be higher, will require manual tilting downwards in order for the projected image to hit the screen properly. While the swivel base will ease things a bit, most cases will still require keystone correction. This is never a good idea but again the IN72 makes it possible to implement keystone correction without compromising on picture quality. The IN72 projector also needs lots of room at the back because all cabling is located there.
Pixelation
Most 480p projectors have a serious problem with pixelation unless the audience is seated quite a bit away from the screen. The IN72 shows remarkable quality in this regard. The audience can sit a reasonable distance and not have to put up with any pixelation at all.
Interface
IN72 uses a hierarchical menu system that is very similar to the other InFocus models. The menus are easy to understand and follow so a first time user of IN72 will not have any difficulty in getting use to the projector. The remote control is also well designed and nearly everything about the projector can be controlled through it.
Performance
The IN72 projector has a good contrast ratio and displays a bright and crisp image. Most projectors run at about half the listed lumens value when they are in movie mode and the IN72 is quite effective even at that range.
The IN72 claims a 2000:1 contrast ratio and manages to live up to it during runtime. The shadows during video playback are quite distinguishable and dark areas are not reduced to a mishmash of different shades of black and gray. Another thing in favor of the IN72 is that it does not exaggerate red color as some projectors tend to.
The native resolution of the IN72 is 480p, or DVD quality and playing HD-DVD at 1020i or 720p causes the right amount of scaling down without affecting picture quality. DVD playback is fine.
